An emerald cut is a rectangle with clipped corners and long parallel facets, called step cuts. Instead of the scattered sparkle of a round brilliant, you get broad flashes of light, sometimes described as a hall of mirrors. It has an Art Deco, grown-up look that suits slim fingers and long hands especially well.

The catch is that step cuts don't hide much. Inclusions and a slight colour tint are easier to see than in a round or oval, so the stone quality matters more. If budget is tight, a lab-created diamond or premium moissanite gives you a cleaner stone for the money.
